Invalidate Coco Palms Resort permits and prevent rebuilding in the coastal zone
The Coco Palms Resort has long been an eyesore on Kaua'i. Destroyed by Hurricane Iniki in 1992, the resort has yet to be rebuilt 30 years later. In 2021, the resort was purchased for $22 million. The new owners have plans to rebuild the hotel and recently went before the Kaua'i Planning Commission to share annual updates. The Surfrider Foundation Kaua'i Chapter has joined HAPA and the Sierra Club in filing a petition asking the Planning Commission to find that, because of the lack of progress on the project, the permits issued in 2015 should no longer be valid. The Planning Commission has not yet ruled on the permit status. There are concerns that not only does the hotel sit on historic and cultural sites, it is also within the sea level rise inundation zone and covers important wetland habitat.
